Reps direct banks to turn causal workers into permanent staffs
Casualisation of staff is one of the practices in many Nigerian private-owned companies which have been repeatedly condemned by Nigerians. Commendably, this has gotten the attention of the Nigerian lawmakers as the House of Representatives has issued an important directive regarding the condemned practice.
According to reports, The members of the green chamber on Wednesday, December 4, directed the commercial banks in the country to convert their casual staff who are handling core operations to permanent staff. Legit.ng gathers that the directive which was with immediate effect was at the instance of Hon Amobi Akintola, representing Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa federal constituency, who moved the motion. The motion was subsequently adopted as the speaker of the house, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila also described staff casualisation as an act of exploitation of the unemployed youths. Akintola lamented that banks staff used to be employed on a full-time basis with access to series of entitlements and benefits such as promotions, health packages, productivity, life insurance policies, housing allowances, wardrobe allowances, feeding allowances. All these benefits are not available to casual staff. The lawmaker added that Nigerian banks are hugely profitable and have no justification for continued casualisation of their staff.
