Soyinka berates FG on attack against Sowore supporters
The experience of supporters of Omoleye Sowore with security agents on Tuesday, November 12, during their protest for the release of the human rights activists has been condemned by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.
Soyinka called on civil society groups to coordinate their reactions to what he described as attack on human rights by the federal government. He said that the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) "must meet, debate, and embark on a binding pact of tactical responses" to the trend. The famous Nigerian writer accused security agencies and the federal government of responding to protests out of excessive fear. He said: “The sporadic, uncoordinated responses as in the case of Omoyele Sowore, the absence of a solid strategy, ready to be activated against any threat — these continue to enable these agencies in their mission to enthrone a pattern of conduct that openly scoffs at the role of the judiciary in national life. “As I remarked from the onset, this is an act of government insecurity and paranoia that merely defeats its real purpose.”
