Abike Dabiri explains what Nigeria is doing to tap into diaspora investment for growth
The chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has explained what the organisation is doing to tap into the human resource of Nigerians abroad for all-round advancement.
In speaking with CNBC, she mentioned what NIDCOM is doing to employ human capital to broaden investment opportunities in Nigeria and increase the country’s foreign direct investment. Abike said that Nigerians are the best at whatever they do in the world, and when that human resource is tapped into, the country will gain better than what it is getting in the oil sector. When asked what investment opportunities the commission is presenting to Nigerians abroad, the NIDCOM chairman said they are looking at sectors like agriculture, education, health care, and others.Abike Dabiri said it is everyone African's responsibility to develop the continent. Abike said through the programme, the doctors can come back home from time to time to give back to the society. In mentioning other areas that are being focused on, she said there is another angle called “the dawn of return” where Nigerians in diaspora can have a spiritual connection with their progenitors that were taken as slaves. She mentioned that they have had three editions of such programme where the third one was held in Badagry. “As long as you are a black man and Africa is being looked down upon, you will be looked down upon. So, it is our responsibility as Africans at wherever we are to develop this continent,” she said.
