Nigeria's anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that 890 convictions were secured by the commission within January and October 2019. Speaking at a special town hall meeting on the fight against corruption in Nigeria, the chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, said the number of the conviction secured by the EFCC this year is the largest across the globe.
At the meeting which was organised by the ministry of information, culture and tourism and the National Orientation Agency in Abuja, on Thursday, November 7, Magu said, the number of convictions stated above is open for verification by individuals who doubt it. He also said that in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the EFCC was able to secure 103, 189, 190 and 202 convictions. Magu told the participants that the increase in the number of convictions can be attributed to the establishment of EFCC's regional offices and collaboration of judges across Nigeria. He also said that billions of naira have been recovered by the EFCC and the money channelled into Nigeria's development. Magu said: “In the last four years, with the political will of President Muhammadu Buhari, we have embarked on enforcement and preventive measures against corruption with a view to tame the monster." “With the preventive, enforcement and prosecution mandate given to the Commission, all that is needed is the combination of courage, integrity, and determination," Magu said. Meanwhile it was previously reported that the EFCC secured the arrest of Instagram big-boy popularly known as Mompha in abuja after he was trailed from Dubai where he is based through his air ticket by the Interpol, Mompha is being accused of engaging in money laundering and internet fraud activities up to the tune of N55 billion.
