El-Rufai orders persecution of university lecturers accused of sexual harassment

Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai has directed the state attorney general to investigate and prosecute some university lecturers accused of sexual harassment.
The Kaduna State University (KASU) suspended Bala Umar, one of the university's lecturers accused of sexually harassing female students. The university's action followed a one-person protest staged by one of the female students allegedly harassed by the lecturer. Professor Abdullahi Ashafa, KASU's deputy vice-chancellor, academics, said the university has zero-tolerance for sexual harassment misconduct by its members of staff and would not hesitate to deal appropriately with anyone found wanting. However, Governor El-Rufai, in a tweet on Thursday, October 24, said the suspension was the first step which would be followed up with prosecution. The governor, therefore, directed the attorney general of Kaduna state to investigate and prosecute Umar alongside other 15 lecturers of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who were reportedly sacked for a similar offence. He said: "KADUNA UPDATE: The suspension of Mr Umar by KASU is the first step. He & 15 lecturers sacked by nearby ABU Zaria for sexual harassment will be fully investigated & prosecuted by the Attorney General of Kaduna State. We must face evil & end this scourge in our state !!!
