Electricity: We won’t tolerate outrageous bills - Gbajabiamila

Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the House of Representative, has given the assurance that lawmakers would ensure that Nigerians get adequate supply of electricity, commensurate with what they pay for.
The lawmaker gave the assurance on Wednesday, September 18 when he received the management team of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at his Abuja office. The speaker said it was the responsibility of the green chamber to make life easier for Nigerians. He stressed that utmost attention would be paid by the House to the practice of estimated billing by electricity distribution companies. Gbajabiamila pointed out that DISCOs are taking advantage of the system to over-charge Nigerians; warning that estimated billings won’t be tolerated by the lower legislative chamber. The speaker said lawmakers have resolved to revisit the matter and come up with a law which would end the practice of estimated billing nationwide. He said: “The issue of estimated billing has been in the front burner. It has been in this House, and we will revisit it soon. We can’t allow Discos to continue to do what they have been doing over the years.” On his part, the TCN MD said the new management had repositioned the company. He, however, decried the lack of investment; pointing out that this was the challenge being faced by the company. The MD said in order to function well, the company needed a $4.3 billion investment.
