Two policemen arrested for taking money for bail in Anambra
Two policemen were Tuesday arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for collecting money for bail. The policemen, an Inspector and a sergeant, a source said were arrested and made to refund N60,000 taken from a suspect as bail. Their arrest followed an alarm raised by an online journalist on a police Whatsapp platform where the Commissioner of Police in the state, John Abang, is a member.
It was gathered that the CP after reading the message on the platform ordered an investigation into the matter, wherein the two police officers were found culpable. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident to our correspondent. He said the culprits were attached to the Ogidi police station and that they allegedly extorted the sum of N60,000 from one Mrs. Love Mbachu and two others. He said the CP, on hearing about it, directed ACP X SQD to recover the money within 12hours as well as “investigate and ensure justice and equity is done to the matter”. The PPRO added, “In compliance with the CP’s directives, the policemen involved have been arrested, defaulted and the money sum N60,000 was also recovered and handed over to the victims”. He said, “cases are under investigation after which the defaulters would be tried in orderly room”. Abang had on assumption to office, about three weeks ago, read a riot act to officers and men of the command, stressing that his administration has zero tolerance for corruption.
