Elisha Abbo: Senate insists on probe despite court order
The Senate on Wednesday, July 17, said that investigation of Senator Elisha Abbo, who was involved in physical abuse, must continue despite a court order on the issue. The upper chamber extended the duration of the committee charged with the investigation by one week so that it can reach a logical conclusion on the matter. It should be noted that the decision for the extension was taken when Sam Egwu, the chairman of the committee, asked for more time to resolve issues in the investigation.
The committee submitted that it had interview all the parties involved in the case except the victim and the shop owner who have refused to come forward. Egwu further said that Senator Abbo, the FCT commissioner of police and lawyer to the victim, all refused to comment on the matter, saying that to do is unnecessary since the issue is already in court. He said: “Mr president, we set out to do this investigation. In the course of our interaction, our colleague (Senator Abbo) made it clear to us that he has been invited by the police where he was detained for 24 hours and, thereafter, charged to court. “The case is already in court and it is subjugated. He cannot go ahead and give us any information in order not to be subjugated. Thereafter, we invited the police and the CP of Abuja, who came and told us the IG of police asked him to investigate the matter. On the other hand, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, however, disagreed with the suggestion of the committee chairman that the investigation should be put on hold until the police and court have concluded with the case. Lawan said: “Let me clarify this. We are not investigating the criminal aspect, we are investigating misconduct. The Senate is not investigating what the police are investigating. The senator who raised a point of order came under privilege.
