President Buhari elected chairman of ECOWAS

President Muhammadu Buhari has been elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the 53rd session of the body held on Tuesday in Togo's capital, Lome.
His election, according to a statement by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, came about despite the President not putting himself up for the post.
The statement also noted that President Buhari promised to work to take ECOWAS "to greater heights".
"I am truly humbled and pledge to serve and work with all of you to deliver on peace, security, good governance and socio-economic development of the sub-region," the President was quoted as saying.

Buhari also praised the effort made by his predecesssor Faure Gnassingbe, the President of Togo as his country successfully hosted two important meetings of the Joint Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and ECOWAS as well as the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.
