The Uk Government has announced that it will build a new wing at he KiriKiri Prison in Lagos to accomodate prisoner that they plan to transfer from the country.
Based on reports by Reuters, it estimated that the new 112-bed wing which will be would be compliant with the United Nations standards, would cost £700,000 ($973,000).
British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, in a written statement to parliament said tenders had been placed and a supplier-which he did not name- identified to take oversight of the building work at the prison.
Funds for the the project will be gotten from the Britain's Conflict, Stability and Security Fund, set up for preventing conflicts and stabilizing countries or region, with an annual budget of one billion British pounds.
The deal ensures that eligible prisoners serving criminal sentences in Nigeria and Britain can be returned to their respective countries to complete their sentences, and the number of prisoners likely to be moved was not be public.
This move makes sure that Britain's prison system which has been showing signs of severe strain in recent years, with overcrowding, rising suicide rates and a growing problem with drug trafficking and other crimes within jails will get a much needed relief by way of reduction in the numbers of prisoners it houses.
It would also make it easier for Britain to comply with a prisoner transfer agreement it signed with Nigeria in 2014.
