Fresh trouble may be brewing in the country as a new militant group, Niger Delta Red Squad (NDRS), has emerged in Imo state, southeastern Nigeria.
Following the militant tradition of bombing oil installations, the new group has claimed responsibility for the bombing of two pipelines belonging to Elf Oil Company at Awara, Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo state.
The NDRS are threatening to attack more oil pipelines, and shut down all oil wells in the State.
The emergence of this new group of militants comes barely two weeks after federal lawmakers raised issues with the exclusion of Imo State from those included to dialogue with the Federal Government on resolving the Niger Delta crisis.
The lawmakers were of the opinion that the exclusion of Imo State from negotiations because the Federal Government believed its youths were peaceful, could trigger militant activities within the State.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the NDRS stated its resolve to carry out its threat, insisting on continuing the sabotage, until the oil-producing areas of Imo State are given what rightfully belongs to them. The group warned oil companies to immediately evacuate their staff.
