Declare 3 years state of emergency on economy, S-E, S-S professionals tell Buhari

Experts under the aegis of the South-East/South-South Professionals have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a three year state of emergency on the nation's economy.

The group's President, Emeka Ugwu Oju, made the demand on Thursday when he led some of his members to meet with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, UgwuOju said that the economy was in quite a bad shape and drastic measures were required to get it out of the woods.

He said: "We strongly suggest and advise Mr. President, to as a matter of urgency, in consultation with the National Assembly, to declare a three year state of emergency on the economy."

Ugwu-Oju said the group's stance was not politically motivated because this is not about the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), adding that it is something that is non partisan as the economy is bad and people should realise that because we are making it seem like is something that will go away.

The group recalled that Nigeria was having $100 a barrel which has dropped to $50 a barrel and may continue till 2019 and "we have to factor it in."

"On the current stage of the economy, we strongly suggested and advised that  the  president, as a matter of urgency in consultation with the National Assembly, should declare a three-year state of emergency on the economy.
"And this is not about the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It is something that is non-partisan. Our economy is bad.  People should realise that because we are making it seem like is something that will go away.

"We the professionals want to see what we can bring to the table. We from the South-South South East, we are bringing the energy corridor project to the table and we can say we have the most comparative advantage on that."

He said the raging fuel scarcity is a typical example of what has happened, which Nigeria did not plan for and urged the Federal Government to carry Nigerians along to resolve the crisis.

"The total leadership has to realise that all Nigerians have to come together, we have to roll up our sleeves so that everyone has a role to play. We all have to keep sacrificing and it is not just the poor that should be sacrificing alone.
