After spending N600 million on the import of dogs in the past few years, the Nigeria Police have commissioned a Dog Breeding Centre with capacity to rear 200 police dogs yearly.
The centre also has the capacity to supply police dogs to the entire West African sub region.
With this development, Nigeria will, soon stop the importation of dogs for policing and security activities.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, disclosed this at the formal commissioning of the Nigeria Police Dog Breeding Centre in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the IGP, the construction of the Dog Breeding Centre, was a deliberate move to support the operational dog requirements of other law enforcement agencies and the Armed Forces as well as breeding of friendly puppies for the civilian population on commercial basis.
"The Dog Breeding Centre has the capacity to conveniently breed and supply police dogs to the entire West African sub region and it is projected that at optimal breeding capacity, it can produce well above 200 dogs per year.
"With this commissioning, procurement of dogs for policing activities from foreign countries would now become a thing of the past, and the Nigeria Police Force will in no distant future take its place of pride among nations with professional K9 ability.
"It is my expectation that aside enhancing the anti crime and internal security competence of the Force, the Nigeria Police Force Dog Breeding Centre and Mounted Troop Stable will restore the policing memories of old when well groomed, well trained and well guided Force animals were deployed on strategic ceremonial functions that enhanced public admiration of the Force and strengthened police community relationship", the IGP stressed.
