How a Police Constable "Apprehended" Armed Robbery Gang
A police Constable in Moferere area of Ekiti State, Olufowobi Olusegun, displayed an uncommon bravery last Wednesday when a gang of heavily armed robbers struck at his residence. The bandits had reportedly invaded the area where he was living at about 8.40pm and made straight to one of the apartments which, unknown to them, was that of the Police Constable.
It was gathered that he engaged the robbers in a shootout which lasted for some minutes. Unfortunately, while he was battling the bandits numbering three, a bullet hit him on the bare chest and he fell down. However, he did not give up as he cleverly aimed a bullet on the stomach of one of the robbers forcing them to flee from the area. The Police Constable who was attached to Ado area Command still continued to fire sporadically until he made sure they disappeared from the scene before collapsing on the ground, in a pool of his blood.
It was learnt that Policemen attached to Ologere division personally led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Idowu Salami, were quickly contacted and they arrived the scene. They reportedly rushed their dying colleague to an undisclosed private hospital from where they were referred to Ado -Ekiti Teaching hospital. But on arrival, it was discovered that the staff were on strike. Constable Olusegun could no longer hold on as he later yielded to death, while his colleagues were making efforts to take him to another hospital.
The death of the brave constable seemed to had incensed his colleagues who immediately directed all police stations in Ekiti and Ondo states to be on the look out for any one with case of bullet wound. Acting on this information, Policemen in Ile-Ife, reportedly traced one of the injured robbery suspects to Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital , Ile-Ife,where he was on a life supporting machine.
Two suspected members of his gang said to have been found in the hospital were subsequently arrested. While the suspects were about to be whisked into the police waiting van, another lady later discovered to be the ailing suspect’s girlfriend walked in with some drugs and was also arrested.
During preliminary investigation, the ailing suspect was discovered to be a student of the Federal Polytechnic , Ado, Ekiti. One of the suspects, Kolade Olajide , was also discovered to be a 300 -level Medical student of Madona University.
When interviewed, the girlfriend to the injured suspect, 20-year-old Ofalaye Olasunkanmi, claimed to be oblivious of her boyfriend’s activity. According to the pre-degree student of Adeyemi College of Education, “ On Wednesday, Kolade, my boyfriend’s friend, called to inform me that Blessing was shot. I called Blessing’s sister in Lagos to inform him about the news.
Later, Kolade called me the next day at 4am to inform that Blessing was in Ile-Ife, receiving treatment. I refused to go because I did not know why he was shot. Eventually , I went to the hospital , with the intention of finding out what happened but I met him sleeping. When he woke up , doctors asked him what happened and he said he was shot by unknown persons. The doctor gave me a list of drugs to get for the treatment, which amounted to twelve thousand naira.
I went to withdraw the sum of ten thousand with his ATM card because he had given me the pin number. I added the money to what I had on me to get the drugs . But as I was coming with the drugs, I was arrested by the Police. Blessing never told me he was a robber. I have known Kolade, one of the arrested suspects, as his friend but I never knew what they were into. Blessing only told me they went to the same primary school “, she said, crying.
