Police Inspector facing murder charges kills self in Lagos
The Lagos State Police command, Wednesday night,
announced that one Inspector Okon Essien, committed suicide. It is,
however, still unclear the nature of his death.
Essien had been in
detention for murder charges at the State Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) cell Yaba. His detention followed the shooting and
killing of one Hassan Usman Stanley.
DSP Bala Elkana, Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement, said the deceased was arrested, last Friday, alongside Inspector Lawrence Adegboye, Inspector Olorunloju Olusegun and Sgt Ovbioghi Joseph. The Police officers had earlier intercepted four suspects: Samson Ugonah, Omachi Godwin, Hassan Usman Stanley and Prosper Okoye along Area 12, Offshore Oil Dangote Refinery Project, Akodo. After the arrest, Essien was alleged to have shot at one of the suspects, Hassan Usman Stanley, resulting in his death. The Policemen were then arrested and taken to State CID Yaba for investigation”, the statement said. Meanwhile, the corpse of the late policeman has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu has ordered an investigation into the case.
