20 year old Iranian activist, Saba Kord Afshari sentenced to 24 years in prison for removing her hijab
According to Daily Mail, a 20-year-old activist, Saba Kord Afshari, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison in Iran. Afshari’s 24 year sentence includes 15 years for ‘spreading corruption and prostitution by removing hijab’.
The young lady before her arrest had been very active in protesting against the compulsory wearing of hijabs as she and her mother, Raheleh Ahmadi, posted several videos of themselves walking on the streets without their headscarves. According to reports, the 20-year-old was initially arrested and served a one year sentence for a similar offence in August 2018 and she was released in February. This did not deter Afshari from continuing protests to stop human rights abuse by the Iranian government. This eventually led to her being detained in prison after she was arrested in June. Iran Human Rights Monitor explained that Afshari had been continually pressured to make videos confessing her crimes and she continually refused to do so as her mother was even arrested to further increase the pressure on her. Afshari’s sentence is said to have been increased due to her numerous charges and previous records, Iran Human Rights Monitor reports. It was also gathered that three other female activists were also jailed for a total of 18 years. Shima Babaii, Mojgan Lali, and Shaghayegh Mahaki, were each sentenced to six years in jail for 'association and collusion against national security' and 'propaganda against the state'.
