A pregnant woman gave birth at an abortion clinic during a visit for a consultation about a termination.
The woman, who has not been identified, went into labor during an ultrasound scan at the Jackson Women's Health Organization clinic in Jackson, Mi., Tuesday.
A doctor at the clinic – the only one in Mississippi that performs terminations – delivered the baby girl, with both she and her mother reported to be doing well.
It happened as the woman had a scan to see how far advanced her pregnancy was, the Jackson Clarion Ledger reported.
The clinic has not confirmed what stage the woman's pregnancy was at, but has an internal policy stipulating that it does not perform abortions after 16 weeks, its director Shannon Brewer said.
Mississippi's Governor Phil Bryant signed the toughest abortion legislation in the US in March, banning terminations after 15 weeks.
That prompted the Women's Health Organization to sue, which saw a temporary restraining order extended until October.
The organization's website says it provides ‘family planning services to help meet the unique health care needs of women.
‘These services include: pregnancy testing, contraception counseling, and abortion services.'
