The University of Jos (UNIJOS) library complex located at the permanent site at Naraguta Campus of the institution was on Saturday gutted by fire, destroying valuables and other academic materials in the process.
The institution's Vice Chancellor, Prof Sebastian Maimako told journalists on Sunday that the fire started at about 6:30 pm
He said, books, umarked examinations scripts and other materials got burnt in the building.
"On the fourth floor which was completely razed down, we have the Departments of Psychology, Political Sciences, Economics and office of Dean of Management Sciences.
Maimako expressed shock over the incident, saying that the building which was officially open in 1997, also had materials from the Faculties of Education, Arts and Department of Geology.
However, a source told our correspondent that the destruction in the institution is monumental.
According to the source, "UNIJOS will never be the same again. All documents since 1976 are gone and that means that in the next five years, UNIJOS may not graduate anybody."
Reacting to the incident, the Plateau State Director of Fire Service, Mr Samuel Musa, said they got a report of the incident at about 6:40 pm on Saturday and his men immediately rushed to the scene but had to call for reinforcement from other units because of the magnitude of the fire.
According to him, it took his men six hours to put out the fire, adding that no life was lost during the inferno.
