12 homes, property worth N10m destroyed by flood waters in Rivers

About 12 homes and property worth over N10 million were destroyed by flood waters over the weekend at Igbogo area of Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The flood followed a down pour that persisted all through Friday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
It also affected two churches in the area, including a Deeper Christian Bible Ministry.
According to a victim, Mr. Innocent Egwanwo, the flood came into the community as a result of illegal structures along the waterways.
Noting that he and his family woke up late in the night to see water at knee level, Egwanwo lamented, saying, "I have stayed in this place for 10 years.
"For six years now, since people began to block the waterways with illegal structures, we have been witnessing flooding, but this one is the worst. Even speed boats can move on it. The flood brought down fences. Our fence collapsed on my make-shift house.
"My property and those of over 12 others worth over 10 million were damaged by the flood. Because the incident happened at night, we could not save anything. Two churches were also affected.
"The Government should consider the nature of Igbogo Road and speed up the road construction.
"The diversion of water into our compound was as a result of the slow pace of work on that road, because since the road and the drainage are not completed, water finds its way into people's compounds.
"My prayer now is that it should not rain again. If it does, we will be in trouble. We are calling on the state Government to help us channel the water to the canal so that people can sleep."
