The Enugu State police command has commenced investigation into the circumstances under which, one Miss Okike Ezinne, an 18-year-old girl from Isu Mbaneze in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, sold her 18-month-old baby to a 46-year-old lady, Mrs Gloria Okafor, for N300,000.

In a press statement from the office of the command's Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said Ezinne, Mrs Okafor and her girlfriend, Miss Promise Godwin, who linked her to the deal, have been arrested.

Ezinne told the police that her baby whom she named Chisom Raphael was born out of wedlock and when the care for her became a serious burden to her, her friend (Promise Godwin), about 20 years old and a native of Isu Mbaneze in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, advised her to relocate to Enugu, with a promise to find her a helper.

According to Ezinne, they were leaving at Coal Camp axis of Enugu metropolis, until Godwin left to join commercial sex workers at the popular 4 Corner Junction along Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway. There and then the realities of hard times dawned on her once again, she lamented.

Ezinne further explained that when Godwin resurfaced in March, she told her that she had perfected plans on how they can sell her baby to Mrs Okafor, a married but childless woman who is in dire need of a child.

She said that Okafor was ready to pay N300,000 for the baby.

According to the police, Mrs Okafor who hails from Uturu was married to the late Sunday Okafor of Umudi Lokpanta in Abia State but went into illegal child adoption and sale of unwanted babies to prospective buyers.

Ezinne said she accepted offer as the last option for her survival. To perfect the plot, Godwin arranged with a commercial cyclist who took them to Limca Bus Stop along at Okigwe in Imo State, along Enugu Port Harcourt Road, where Okafor waited. She parted with her child after collection of the sum of N300,000.

The police said investigation revealed that they shared the money upon return to Enugu, with Ezinne receiving N200,000 while Godwin collected N50,000. They balance went to the motorcyclist, whom the police described as a client to Godwin in her brothel.

The police said the bubble on the dirty deal burst when Okafor and Godwin were hatching plans on how to sell her (Promise Godwin's) 13-month- old baby, named Chiadikobi.

Okafor told the police that she resold Ezinne's baby to a client whom she doesn't know her whereabouts.
