Two students of the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) were on Saturday night beheaded by yet to be identified persons suspected to be cultists.
The State Police Command, which confirmed the incident, said the killers took the victims' heads away from the scene of the attack to an open field.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Udeviotu Onyeke, told newsmen on Monday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, that the victims were Samuel Ethelbert, a 300 level student of Political Science and Ebuka Nwaigwe, also a 300 level student of Estate Management.
He said the assailants inflicted severe machete cuts on the third victim, Isaac Umeasoro, a 300 level student of Political Science who is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Enugu.
The dismembered bodies of the victims have been deposited in a mortuary at Uturu, Onyeke said.
He said a group of armed men numbering about eight, invaded a private lodge known as Chido Hostel on the outskirts of the campus where the victims lived.
He said the attackers, who drove in a bus, parked their vehicle along the Uturu/Afikpo Road before heading for Room 24 occupied by the deceased.
The attack on the hostel located about two kilometres away from the university occurred at 9:30pm on the fateful day.
Onyeke said: "Eight men armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons scaled the fence of the lodge of about 40 rooms and attacked the victims.
"On getting to the room they met the three occupants, beheaded two and terribly injured the third person. They took the heads of the beheaded ones to a field close to the university and dropped them there," police said.
A source at the university said that the attackers used "Ghana Must Go" bags to convey the severed heads of the victims to the university field where they used them to form a mini goal post.
"It was a gory sight here when it was discovered in the morning that two fresh human heads were used to form a goal post," the source said.
The police spokesman said that by the time officers stormed the scene of the crime when they were alerted, the attackers had fled, "and no trace of them could be made."
He said that the survivor, who was severely wounded in the head, chest and arms regions, could also not provide any clue about their assailants.
According to him, the survivor said he was hungry and only came to the victims' room who were his friends to eat Indomie noodle (food) before the attackers struck.
Onyeke, who was also at the scene of the crime said: "I have been seeing blood but this one was something else, "as he described the horrifying scene of the gruesome murder.
