Some parents in Ajegunle have subsidised the school fees they pay for their kids by giving well sorted plastic bottles to the school. This was made possible after some schools collaborated with a non-governmental organisation in Lagos, the RecyclesPay Educational Project. The initiative has encouraged students pay attention to their environment and also help clean up In some parts of Nigeria, particularly in Lagos states, plastic bottles have constituted a nuisance as people carelessly litter the environment with them.
    Some gutters are even clogged with these plastics causing them to overflow during rainy seasons which in turn lead to outbreak of diseases. Well a school in Ajegunle, Lagos, has adopted a method that would help parents reduce the school fees of their wards and also keep the environment clean. Morit International School in Ajegunle allows parents pay the school fees of their kids with properly sorted plastic bottles. This came after the school collaborated with an initiative of a non-governmental organisation in Lagos, African Clean Up Initiative (ACI), called the RecyclesPay Educational Project. It was reported that the school adopted the initiative after it was discovered that some parents had difficulty in paying the fees of their children.      The proprietor of the school Mr. Patrick Mbamara, said: It is helping to cushion the financial burden of parents in the school. We have a history of parents finding it difficult to pay each term school fees of N7, 500. The money from the PET bottles is not much but it balances for what the parents can pay. I and my staff are happy with this initiative. It has improved parents payment of school fees and it teaches the children how to manage their waste and promote a cleaner environment. The Chief Environmental Officer of ACI, Alex Akhigbe, explained that a kilo of the sorted plastic goes for N20 to N25 and that if a parent brings about 10 kilos of plastic, they get N200 or N250. It is interesting to note that about 25 parents have welcomed the idea and even participated in the project as they take plastic bottles to the school on designated days for the recyclers to collect. If everybody in Lagos state adopts this initiative, there would be a noticeable change in the city.
