PENGASSAN and NUPENG suspend strike

After meeting with the Federal Government, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), suspended their strike action on Wednesday.
The meeting which ended at 1am was attended by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, the oil unions, and international oil companies.
At the meeting, issues of job security and improved welfare for workers were discussed, amongst others.
The Minister appealed to the companies not to lay off workers as Government is trying to make the environment more conducive for their businesses.
The strike action had been embarked upon following unresolved  disputes over the implementation of the 2015 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the oil unions and the Federal Government, the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), and the state under which the oil workers operate.
While PENGASSAN declared the beginning of its industrial action last week, NUPENG had postponed its own strike action pending the outcome of this meeting.
At the close of its National Executive Committee meeting, PENGASSAN called on its members nationwide to resume work with immediate effect.
