Dangote Cement Plc on Saturday began the construction of a new cement plant in Okpella, Edo State.
The President and Chief Exective, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote on Sunday, unveiled a $1 billion dollar cement factory in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to a statement by the firm on Sunday, by this investment, Dangote's production capacity in Nigeria alone will go up to 41 million mtpa.
The plant, he said, when operational, will create 4, 000 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs.
Dangote said, the plant, when completed would transform the entire economic activities of the community, the state and Nigeria.
He commended Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, for his developmental strides, noting that the infrastructure built by the state government had not only attracted the Dangote Group to site but other investors to the state.
The business mogul added that the economic difficult currently witnessed in the country is as a result of the non active participation of the private sector in the development of the country.
"A key factor that drives investments in an economy is the presence of an investor friendly business climate. Indeed, Edo State today is one of the most attractive investment destinations in Nigeria.
"The economic reforms in Edo State especially in the area of tax, innovations in rural finance and investment on infrastructure have produced an enabling environment that has further provided a platform for future growth. All these factors encouraged us to consider Edo State as the right destination for this investment.
"This project is only one of our several successful projects presently ongoing in parts of the country and outside in more than 16 other locations in African countries, in line with our Pan African investment strategy. Last year June, we commissioned our cement plant in Ethiopia, and in August of same year in Zambia and Cameroon.
The state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said the project is worth over what the state government had spent in the last seven and half years in constructing roads, building schools and other infrastructure in the state.
