The National leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike in all public universities with effect from Monday, March 9. President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, disclosed this in Enugu, Monday, after the Union’s two-day National Executive Council meeting. He explained that Nigerian universities were under ceaseless siege, a situation that needed to be addressed. Ogunyemi explained that the essence of the industrial action was to force the Federal Government to take action on the pending issues. ASUU has being at logger heads with the Federal government after the govt ordered the compulsory registration of University workers to enroll under the IPPIS system, this resulted in outrage from the academic union after it stated that the peculiarities of University lecturers were not considered when the IPPIS syetem was being set up and hence urged all it's members not to register, The govt on the other handle warned that all those who were not registered under the system would no longer receive their salaries. These among other lingering issues ASUU has with the govt can be attributed to the warning strike.
