House of Reps uncovers govt agency paying workers salary 14 years after close down

Some workers of the Nigeria Mining Corporation are allegedly being paid salaries, 14 years after the agency was closed down. The development was uncovered by the House of Representatives's committee on public account on Monday, February 24.

According to reports, After the discovery the committee's chairman, Oluwole Oke, directed the minister of solid minerals and steel development, the minister of water resources and the director-general of the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) to appear before the committee to answer questions on the agencies under their supervision. The Nation reports that the ministers were invited mainly to offer explanations as to why an agency that was closed in 2006 was still paying salaries. It was gathered that the assistant general manager (finance) of the agency, Dauda Ibrahim Gambo, explained to the committee that the corporation was closed for privatisation while its workers were asked to collaborate with the BPE for a successful privatisation. The house committee has also threatened to issue a warrant of arrest against government agencies that have failed to appear before it, after summons. Oke said that agencies that failed to appear before the committee have something to hide.
