UK to close borders to non-English speakers and unskilled workers

Britain is to make changes to its immigration laws that will close its borders to unskilled workers and those who can’t speak English. The UK Guardian reports that the new immigration policy is part of a plan to end the era of cheap EU labour in factories, warehouses, hotels and restaurants.

The British government on Wednesday, 19 February, said the new policy would allow the government to take full control of British borders for the first time in decades. It stated that the measures would also eliminate what it described as the distortion caused by EU freedom of movement. But the new policy has been faulted by industry leaders who warned that the move could have consequences with job losses and closures in factories. However, ministers have urged businesses to stop making use of cheap migrant labour, noting that the new policy was part of the Brexit demanded by the electorate.
