Transfer : Man united's move for Bruno Fernandes called off

Manchester United’s move for highly-rated midfielder Bruno Fernandez looks to have collapsed after weeks of speculation. This is after the two clubs failed to agree on the valuation of the player who was heavily tipped to move to Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

According to reports, Sporting Lisbon have been adamant that Fernandes, 25, is worth at least €80 million (£68m/$89m) and The Sun reports that the Portugal giants are unwilling to budge. It is thus understood that United’s co-chairman Joel Glazer called off the deal because of the asking price which is considered too hefty. Despite the deal looking imminent in the past few days, the situation now seems unsalvageable as United are overly concerned about the structure of the transfer. United had offered €60.5m (£51m/$67m) for the midfielder’s services but Lisbon rate Fernandes at a much higher price. The new development could offer a window of opportunity to Tottenham Hotspur, who have been monitoring the Portugal international as well. With Cristian Eriksen seemingly keen on a move away from London, Fernandes looks like the perfect replacement for Mourinho, who has a liking for Portuguese players. The January transfer window is set to close in eight days’ time and as far as Manchester United are concerned, they are seriously running out of time to secure some signings to bolster their squad which does not seem capable of keeping a consistent decent form this season.
