Soldier, 4 insurgents reportedly killed as troops battle Boko Haram in Borno

A gunfight between soldiers and Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state over the weekend has reportedly resulted in the deaths of a soldier and 4 insurgents.

According to reports, The gun battle occurred when the terrorists attacked a military checkpoint near Firgi in Bama local government area on Friday evening, January 17. A source told the newsmen that the dead soldier was on Saturday, January 18, brought to 7 Division Hospital in Maiduguri where the injured troops were also being treated. “They (the insurgents) came around 8pm and were firing RPG and anti-aircraft guns. There was pandemonium everywhere, troops helped evacuate the hub staff to their base,” an aid worker narrated. The source said the troops were able to repel the attack from the insurgents. The aid worker stated that the Boko Haram fighters destroyed five cars and looted stores, carted away foodstuff and other valuables during the attack. Meanwhile, the European Parliament, the legislative hand of the European Union (EU), has said that no progress has been made in the war against Boko Haram. The Cable repored that this disclosure was made in the EU resolution of Thursday, January 16, even as it notes that there have been attacks carried out by the insurgents in recent weeks. In talking about the attacks, the parliament said that the security situation in the nation has worsened, saying there is no excuse for the abuse of human rights.
