Zamfara : Matawalle assents bill against payment of pensions to ex-governors, others
The jumbo annual payment allegedly to the tune of N700 million to former governors, deputies, ex-speakers, and others in Zamfara has been stopped. This is as a result of the new bill signed into law by Zamfara state governor, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, on Wednesday, November 27, Daily Trust reports.
Speaking after signing the bill into law, Governor Matawalle promised to use the money that would have been paid to the former governors and others to address the problem of rising unemployment among youths in the state. Recall that the immediate past governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, had earlier asked Matawalle pay his outstanding allowance and pension without further delay. The monthly allowance according to a leaked letter being circulated on social media is N10 million. Governor Matawalle said it was regrettable that though the state has a backlog of workers’ pensions to the tune of N10 billion, his predecessor is asking to be paid N120 million annually. Having signed the bill repealing the jumbo allowance into law, Matawalle said Yari would now be collecting the exact amount he was collecting as his monthly salary while he was a governor, which would continue as his pension for life.
