Lionel Messi has come out to reveal that he does not fancy the tag ‘god’ despite the fact that his ardent fans are keen on giving him holy names to match his brilliance.
        Messi has for years been tipped as the greatest player to ever grace the beautiful game and while he has closely been rivaled by Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, some of his records are simply hard to match by any stretch. In a recent interview by RAC1, Messi was asked an array of questions including whether he liked the highest holy nick-name “football god”. Typically, any athlete would be honored to be likened to a god in his respective field but for Barcelona and Argentina’s all time goalscorer, he feels it is a bit too much. He acknowledged that people who brand him a football god mean well but he was also wary of the fact that to call him a god was a bit over the top. “It’s nice to be praised because people are being respectful. They don’t say it with any ill intent, but actually, with the complete opposite. But I think it’s very exaggerated to call me that,” the Barcelona legend said. Part of the reason he did not fancy such a mystical label was because his sons closely follow his football path and it might prove to be a bit misleading when they get older. “Because of my sons, the age they have, they hear things and they copy them. My son, Mateo, calls me ‘Leo Messi,” [he’ll say,] ‘let’s go Leo Messi!’” he went on. Messi’s brilliance was recently recognized once again after he scooped the the best men's player award at the Best FIFA awards in September.
