An Italian aid worker in Kenya's Kilifi County have been taken hostage by unknown gunmen, on Tuesday at about 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT), Kenyan police say.
The 23-year-old female volunteer was taken after a trading centre was attacked by the gunmen who "fired indiscriminately", leaving five people wounded.
The police says the motive behind the attacker and the identity of the kidnapped volunteer is yet to be known.
The force added that the incident -first time a foreigner has been kidnapped in Kenya since 2011- is being treated as terror attack.
"The European lady got out of her room, instead of lying on the ground, to enquire what was going on," an eye-witness told local media. "One of the attackers then slapped her."
Reuters news agency reports a witness said the attackers spoke in Somali.
