Liverpool signing and current RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita has launched an appeal to German authorities against a penalty order for using forged documents while applying for a driving licence in Germany.

The spokesman did not confirm a Bild report that Keita, who will join Liverpool next summer, had been told to pay €415,000.

"Yes, there is a penalty order against Mr Keita for forgery," court spokesman Stefan Blaschke said.

"It's a six-figure number, but I can't confirm or deny today's report in Bild Zeitung since an appeal has been lodged."

Keita who is set to join Liverpool next season after signing a deal last summer is accused of twice trying to use fake Guinean driving licence to obtain a German licence.

He reportedly made attempts in both December 2016 and January this year using licences described as forgeries.

Keita's current club Leipzig said at the weekend they were aware of the situation, and press officer Florian Scholz added in a statement that the club "are not assuming this is a forgery matter."
