- JAMB Sets new Cut Off Marks for Admission into Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Innovative Institutes.
- Aims to curb illegal admissions.
- Universities are at liberty to set higher cut off marks.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released new minimum cut off marks for admission into Nigerian Universities. According to the statement provided by the JAMB registrar, Mr Ishaq Oloyede, the minimum cut off mark for admission into any Nigerian University is now 120. The mark for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education has also be set at 100 while any student looking to enter any Innovative enterprising institute in the country would need to score at least 110.
Although these are the minimum marks, Universities are also at liberty to set higher cut off marks for admissions.
This conclusion was arrived at the just concluded 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday.
At the meeting, the JAMB registrar indicated that the Central Admissions Processing System will be used to streamline admissions into universities and that Universities would be able to use this CAPS or manually admit students.
Oloyede said "All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy.
"JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.
"We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark."
He said candidates' applications to study agriculture was very low while applications to study medicine and health sciences increased.
Speaking on illegal admissions, he said the process is now automated because the Registrar of JAMB must approve all candidates.
"About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria," he said
