Contrary to a recent report being circulated, university lecturers under
the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have
said that they had yet to declare an industrial action.
The clarification was made on Tuesday on the heels of a report which claimed that ASUU would commence a one-week warning strike on October 2, 2016.
The publication allegedly credited the report to the University of Abuja-ASUU Chapter Chairman, Dr. Ben Ugheoke.
However, denying the report, ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union had yet to take a decision to embark on a strike yet.
He said, "The union has not taken any decision whether or not to go on strike. All that we have done so far is to sensitise members of the public about the challenges that the education sector and the university system are facing.
"Besides, I do not know how the news came about. I have put a call across to the UNIABUJA-ASUU chairman, who denied ever making the declaration. We shall investigate this to know how it came about in the first place.
"Please help us to inform members of the public that we have yet to declare a strike."
ASUU has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government for a while now, over the non-implementation of a pact signed by both parties in 2009.
