Court refuses Kashamu's request to prevent arrest, extradition

A fresh application by the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial district in the upper legislative chamber, Buruji Kashamu, seeking to stop the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police from arresting him to be extradited to the United States of America, was on Tuesday refused by an Abuja Federal High Court.
Sitting as a vacation Judge, Justice Okon Abang, who agreed to hear the case during the ongoing vacation, held in a ruling that he could not grant the request which was made ex parte.
Abang also ruled that the motion should also be served on the security agencies, to enable them show cause why the restraining injunction sought by the plaintiff should not be granted.
Counsel to Kashamu, Godswill Mrakpor, had asked the court to restrain the security agencies from arresting the Senator.
Mrakpor urged the court to urgently hear the application during court's vacation.
He had informed the court that the security agencies were acting based on a "politically-motivated petition" authored by Oladipupo Adebutu from Ogun State.
The Ogun East senator alleged that there were moves to arrest him and forcefully extradite him to the United States to face drug-related charge.
He also claimed that his arrest would be in breach of orders contained in suit No FHC/ L/CS/49/2010 and suit no FHC/L/CS/508/2015 which both restrained the Federal Government from taking steps to extradite him.
The case has been adjourned till September 8 by Justice Abang.
