Ize-Iyamu emerges as PDP flagbearer in Edo State

After the emergence of Godwin Obaseki on Sunday as the Edo State APC Governorship candidate for the September 10 election, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, on Monday emerged as the candidate for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In the result of the primaries announced by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi, Chairman of the committee that conducted the exercise, Ize-Iyamu polled 584 votes to defeat two other aspirants.

According to the Ebonyi State Governor, his closest opponent, Mr Mathew Uduoeyekemwen, scored 91 votes, while Chief Solomon Edebiri polled 38 votes.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu was Secretary to the State Government during the administration of former Governor of the state, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.

He was South-South leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to the PDP in 2014.

Umahi said that from a total delegate's list of 751 persons, 713 delegates were accredited; and there were no invalid votes.

After being presented to the party members by the Ebonyi State Governor, Ize-Iyamu proceeded to give his acceptance speech, where he commended the national leadership of the party and the electoral committee, for transparency and fairness in the process.

He said that the fight to reclaim Edo would continue until the party produced the Governor in the September election.
