6 policemen, 15 others die in Imo, Ondo auto crashes

No fewer than 21 persons died and several injured on Thursday in separate auto accidents including Six policemen in Imo and Ondo states.In the Imo accident where the policemen were killed, four passers-by along Nazi- Egbu road, Owerri, were injured.
According to eyewitness report in Owerri, the incident occurred about 5:00am. He said the policemen attached to the Safe Highway Patrol along Aba Road rammed into a truck loaded with tiles with special plate number "Lafarge G328" while trying to avoid a head on collision with another truck loaded with drinks.
The witness also said that the fence of the premises of the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim, Mount of Mercy, Naze Branch of Egbu District was also smashed by the impact of the two heavy duty vehicles.
The accident which also left about four passersby and a conductor of one of the trucks seriously injured was said to have caused heavy gridlock on the road.
When contacted, the Imo State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem confirmed the accident but failed to disclose the identities and the rank of the affected police officers.
In the Ondo crash, 15 persons were confirmed dead and four others injured in an auto mishap which occurred on Akure-Owo Expressway.
The accident which occurred yesterday evening between Amurin and Uso in Owo Local Government of the state was said to have caused serious gridlock in the ever busy road for several hours.
The cops involved in the accident, it was gathered, were returning from a patrol on the Owerri/Aba Highway when the trailer ran into their van that fateful morning.
When contacted, the Imo State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem confirmed the accident but failed to disclose the identities and the rank of the affected police officers.

The remains of the victims have been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo
The four survivors who were rescued by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were also taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owo for medical attention.
