Egyptian court hands one year prison sentence on ex-star player for tax evasion

Egyptian foottball legend, Mohamed Aboutrika, has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion or a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($1,100) to have the sentence suspended by a court in Egypt.
Aboutrika, one of the finest footballers in continent, failed to pay $39,500 in taxes on income he had earned from advertising deals with carbonated drink and telecommunications companies in 2008 and 2009, the court said.
Dubbed the "Prince of Hearts" and "The Magician" by his fans, the Egyptian who was instrumental in the country's most successful period -winning the African Cup of Nations title in in 2006, 2008 and 2010- has been living in in exile in Qatar since 2013.
Assets belonging to the ex-Egyptian star was frozen in in 2015.
Last year, he was placed in a no-fly list over allegations of links with the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, which he had publicly sympathised with.
He was not present in court for the verdict on Monday.
