At least 15 Tuaregs killed in tribal attack on Mali village

A raid on a remote desert village by a rival tribe has lead to the death of no fewer than 15 Tuaregs, in the Menaka region of Mali close to the country's border with Niger.

Authorities say the raid occurred on Tuesday.

Bajan Ag Hamatou, a member of parliament from the area, speaking Reuters said, "Armed men entered a Tuareg campsite and killed all the men they found. They were attacked by their Fulani brothers."

It is believed the attack had been motivated by inter-ethnic tensions in the region which has claimed dozens of life this year.

The security situation in the region is in a dire state with attacks by jihadist groups now a common feature with various groups tapping into the ethnic rivalries to recruit new members.

Their frequent attacks in Mali and neighbouring countries have alarmed Western powers.

On Wednesday, an armored vehicle carrying French forces in the northern Kidal region set off a mine but no one was hurt.

Four local residents told Reuters it was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.
