Updated: Ethiopian Prime Minister Tenders Resignation
Ethiopia's Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has announced on Thursday that he has submitted his resignation as both premier and the chairman of the ruling coalition.
The prime minister's decision was made in an effort to facilitate reforms amid a political crisis and lingering unrest in the Horn of Africa country, which has released thousands of prisoners to ease tensions.
In a televised address to the country, Hamilemariam said, "Unrest and a political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many... I see my resignation as vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy".
He added that until the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front and the parliament accepts his resignation and appoints a new premier, he would remain as prime minister in a temporary capacity
