South Africa: Trapped Miners Rescued

All the miners trapped on Wednesday night in South Africa, have been rescued and brought safely brought back to the surface. Rescue workers worked through the night.

Spokesperson for the firm Sibanye-Stillwater, James Wellsted,  confirmed "Everybody's out." He added there were "cases of dehydration and high blood pressure but nothing serious as there was no indication that anyone has been in distress but it had been a traumatic experience." Early on Friday morning, electricity was restored to aid the rescue process.

The Sibanye-Stillwater mining firm owned, Beatrix mine, is in Welkom town, south-west of Johannesburg. The accident is thought to have occurred when a storm knocked over an electricity pylon close to the site, triggering a huge power cut.

Safety has always been an issue in South Africa's mining industry, which is one of the leading producers of gold. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) had earlier expressed concern over the lives and safety of the miners.

Family members gathered along the road to the mine in anticipation of news about their loved ones but were kept back by police forces.
