Eleven people have been killed in fighting between the Congolese army and an armed group in the east of the country, the army said on Tuesday.
Clashes between the army and the Patriotic Resistance Front of Ituri, an ethnically based militia, took place on Monday and overnight in the villages of Kienge and Sibado.
Ten militia members and one civilian were killed, General Jean-Pierre Bongwangela, told dpa from Bunia by telephone.
He said two government soldiers were also seriously injured.
"For the moment, the situation is under control" by the army, Bongwangela said.
