Buhari Did Not Promise To Make His Assets Public- Adesina

Mr. Femi Adesina had declared to newsmen that the President Mr. Muhammadu Buhari must never be held accountable for the public declaration of asset promise, since the president never made any such promise when campaigning for office. Mr. Adesina further stated that the APC was the one that made the promise and not Mr. President and so, the president must never be held accountable.

Mr. Femi Adesina is the media and publicity aid to the president. It would be recalled that the APC made it its lifelong duty to attack the administration of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for not making his assets public to Nigerians. Many Nigerians wondered why the administration of Buhari, that came to power through the APC is towing the same line they had vehemently condemned earlier.

In his words, “You need to get his words right, go and check all that the president said during the campaign, in no place would you see it attributed to him as a person.” It is clear Mr. Adesina is making effort to distance the president from many of the things he promised to carry out during his campaigns. Many Nigerians have reacted negatively to Adesina’s comments and many wondered if similar excuses would not be given regarding other promises that the president made during campaign.

According to Mr. Adesina, the law of the land only requires that the president and other public office holders declare their assets and that president Buhari has done exactly that. The idea of making public declaration is the party’s idea and not that of Mr. President.

Mr. Adesina said there is a procedure to be followed in asset declaration by public office holders. He said the procedure starts with the public office holder declaring his asset and the code of conduct bureau making verifications. After the verifications had been concluded, it is left for the public office holder to make it public or keep it secret. He said the president has already followed the laid down procedure and he is not under any obligation to make his assets public

He said the president has already declared his assets and he had made such available to the code of conduct bureau. He said Nigerians should face the APC and not the president if they want answers to public asset declaration.

It would be recalled that the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari made innumerable promises to Nigerians during their campaign for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They promised to make the dollar equal to naira in value. They promised to end Boko Haram insurgency in three months. They promised to pay Nigerian unemployed graduates stipend of N5000 per month among other promises.

However, many of the promises listed above are far from being fulfilled after more than 3 months in office. For example, it is more than 3 months and Boko Haram is still on rampage in Nigeria. Nothing has been heard since about the N5000 minimum wage they promised to Nigerian unemployed graduates too.
