Woman accuses Lagos supermarket of selling bottle of hand sanitiser for N19,950

The consciousness of Nigerians towards hygiene has heightened since the report that the viral disease, coronavirus, is travelling faster outside China. From wearing facial masks to being mindful of their immediate environment, citizens are now taking safety measures more seriously. It was widely reported that regular washing of hands and the use of hand sanitiser is one of the ways to fight against the disease. As a result of this, the prices of hand sanitisers in the market have escalated.

A Nigerian woman identified as Farida Ladipo-Ajayi took to her social media page to lament the cost of a hand sanitiser she got at a pharmacy in Lagos. Ladipo-Ajayi said that the supermarket sold a 500ml bottle to her for N19, 950. According to her, she was not aware of the price before she purchased the product. She noted that when she returned home and got a debit alert of the product she bought, she realised that it was more than she expected. On getting back to the pharmacy to report the anomaly, she was shocked when she was told that there was no mistake. Lamenting about the experience, she called on the appropriate authorities to work on it. Although, she has deleted the post, below is what she wrote on her Facebook page: “So because of coronavirus, Medmark Pharmacy on Adekunle Osomo street, Soluyi Gbagada, sold this 500ml sanitiser for N19, 950. We didn’t notice, got back, opened the product, then debit alert of N19, 950 came in. took it back and they insist that is the price. I need to escalate this to whomever it may concern, this is too much.” A few hours after Ladipo-Ajayi wrote about her grievances online, she said that she had gotten a full refund of her money from the supermarket.
