House Of Reps Condemn Diversion Of Nigeria-Bound Flights To Other African Countries

The House of Representatives has condemned the recent increase in diversion of international flights by foreign airlines to neighboring African countries. The lawmakers on Tuesday, February 18 during plenary, described the incident as an embarrassment to the country. They queried why the instrument landing system bought for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has not be installed.

International airlines recently cited poor landing equipment at the nation’s airports as the reason for the diversions. The House mandated its committee on aviation to liaise with the relevant agencies to ensure that all the acquired landing equipment were installed at the designated airports without further delay. The committee was also asked to ensure that compensation was paid to the passengers who were stranded recently. he situation has caused widespread anger and outrage among travelling passengers in the country recently. On social media, many are accusing the Nigerian government of incompetence and negligence. Chiggo Onuoha wrote Nigeria has deteriorated, they can't fix landing devices that enable planes to land at MM airport in Lagos thereby forcing international flights to divert passengers to Ghana Adeniyi Adedeji wrote: It's a shame that in this century some International flights into Nigeria are been diverted to neighboring countries because of our inability to meet global standard practice (inability to upgrade the equipment landing instrument). Oke Oludotun wrote: Flights are being cancelled in and out of Lagos at the moment. Passengers stranded, anguish and suffering cos govt didn't invest in safety equipment at the airport. The same govt want to 'invest $500million in a moribund NTA? Who did this to us? Misplaced priorities, clueless leadership.
