Police detains 4 officers who allegedly killed mechanic in Rivers

Following a public outcry and call for justice regarding the death of a mechanic, Chima Ikwunado in Rivers, the state police command on Monday, February 3, 2020, arrested and detained four policemen.

According to reports by an activist, Comrade Phils, Chima was tortured to death in a cell by the policemen, who arrested him alongside four others and falsely accused them of robbery. After the arrest, the mechanic was allegedly tortured to death at Mile 1 Police Station by policemen, who are members of Eagle Crack. It was however gathered that the Commander of the Eagle Crack team, Benson Adetuyi, was not among those arrested, because he was not aware of the ordeal of Chima and his friends. In a new development, Punch reports that the policemen, including the Investigating Police Officer, simply identified as Sam, were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt. Four policemen involved in the torture of Chima and his friends have been arrested and detained. They were detained at the state CID because of qthe role they played in Chima Ikwunado’s death. We learnt that the police are still investigating the matter,” a security source was quoted as saying.

Confirming the detention of the four officers, the Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, said the policemen were detained after being questioned on the incident. They (four cops) were detained after questioning, pending the end of investigation,” Omoni stated. On the second autopsy expected to be conducted on the body of Chima, the PPRO explained that the police were still waiting for the family of the deceased to provide their own pathologist who would be part of the autopsy.
