30,000 PDP members defect to APC in Zamfara

At least 30,000 loyalists and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, January 8, left the party and moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara state. It was gathered that those who defected were loyalists of Ibrahim-Shehu Bakauye, a former governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bakauye also recently left the PDP and joined the APC after a meeting with the former governor of the state, Abdul’aziz Yari. The report said Bakauye served at the National Assembly where he represented Gusau/Tsafe federal constituency between 2011 and 2015. he lost the 2019 governorship election to Bello Matawalle during the PDP primary. Those who defected were led by Nasiru Milo, a former factional chairman of the PDP. "We resolved to join our leader to APC considering various developments the party brought at both state and national level. “We are satisfied with Bakauye’s decision to join the party with a large number of supporters in the state," Milo said on behalf of the defectors. He further said the defectors were happy that they have an opportunity to leave the PDP, which he described as a party with minority supporters, to the APC, the "strongest political party in Zamfara and Nigeria in general." He claimed that they had suffered from injustice and disunity in the PDP for a long time. “We will be loyal to APC leadership in the state and cooperate with all stakeholders for the development of the party," he promised. In his response, the chairman of the APC in the state, Lawal Liman, said the defection is a huge achievement for his party in the state. We are happy with this development in spite of the fact that our party is not in control of the leadership of the state. “This is a strong indication that the APC is the strongest political party in the state," he said.
