Customs intercepts another set of illegal goods as border closure continues (video)

As the Nigerian government intensifies efforts to eradicate smuggling by closing the country’s land borders, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has recorded another key important impoundment.
Operatives of the NCS on Tuesday, October 29, seized containers loaded with expired rice which are allegedly being smuggled into the country from Thailand and China, Premium Times reports. The operatives also impounded other illegal goods such as 11 containers of unregistered pharmaceutical products and two containers of used tyres. Also seized are four containers of refined vegetable oil and a container of used clothing. According to the controller general of customs, Hameed Ali, He estimated the worth of the seized products to be around  N2.7 billion. He also attributed the seizures to the consequences of the border closure. The customs boss said the culprits behind the illegal importation would be fished as the agency continues investigations into the seizures. “Gentlemen of the press, there is no doubt that those who imported these dangerous items do not wish us well. Imagine if they had succeeded in getting the expired rice in and then re-bagged and changed the expiration date for Nigerians to consume,” Ali said.
