Border closure: Nigerian Customs kills notorious rice smugglers’ informant in Jigawa

A wanted informant to rice smugglers in Nigeria-Niger border, Tasiu Muhammed in Babura town of Jigawa, has been killed by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).
Personnel of the NCS revealed that Muhammed, who was familiar with illegal routes in Katsina and Jigawa, gave the service a tough time in carrying out the federal government's order of total border closure. This was as the deceased, according to the officials, was in the business of revealing alternative illegal routes to the smugglers. Muhammed's death has been confirmed by the police commissioner in the state, Bala Zama, in his briefing to journalists in Dutse. The Government's fight against illegal smuggling of rice into the country is taking a very tough stance as the Nigerian government has reiterated that Nigerian borders would remain closed for long until neighboring countries are willing to start monitoring the type of goods it allows to pass through it's country into Nigeria.
